Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Renaissance Leadership class has an overarching goal to promote all kinds of student achievement on campus, in working through positive behavior support to improve the overall culture of the campus. We put on award shows and events throughout the year to recognize students exemplifying Warriors.
My students are at-risk students who are charismatic and vocal, who have the potential to become great leaders, but haven't had a lot of opportunity to hone those skills or put them to good use.
This class gives them purpose and a sense of belonging in the school community, as they work to serve the entire campus.
Our school is a Title I underperforming school, with a high population of non-English speaking students and a high level of poverty as well.
Our population has been shrinking over the years due to cutbacks in electives, and community flight to surrounding schools. But we have such a rich pool of talent within our walls, and amazing hearts and perseverance.
My Project
My students honor Warriors of the Week, Staff of the Month, High Five awards for in-the-moment student achievement and more. We also put on a fall and spring awards assembly honoring not just high achievement but attendance improvement, GPA improvement, behavior improvement, etc. We try to create a culture of celebration and connect to more students than just the highest achievers, in hopes that the motivation to learn and impact on the campus increases more and more.
My students will use these materials to create visual celebrations, posters, signs, display boards throughout campus, to help increase recognition and awareness throughout the campus.
My students are learning what it feels like to do something for others and how they can impact a community.
By having supplies to achieve their goals, they feel more equalized in comparison to neighboring schools that might have departmental funds, and feel like they can reach higher in their vision for the school. We have no district funding and our sole fundraiser for now is recycling. Having these supplies would be a huge relief and a great step for our spring awards assembly!
