This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever tried getting a student to read, because they want to, not because they have to? Getting a student to desire to read is a battle all teachers take part in. The more they read, the better a reader they become.

My students come from high poverty backgrounds.

Many of my students will be first generation high school graduates, and others don't have anyone in their family who went on to college. Family members are so busy worried about making a living that they aren't able to concentrate on the education of the children. They can read, does it matter if they like to read, or how well they can read? Actually it does. Reluctant readers need to be reached. Technology allows reluctant readers to "read" in a cool way.

My Project

It matters how well my students read because it is an indicator of how successful they will be in post-secondary education. It is also an indicator of how financially successful they will be. It is hard to negotiate in the business world if you cannot read the words on the contracts. As a teacher, I am not only preparing them to pass my class, by I am also trying to give them the foundation to be a successful and productive citizen after they leave high school. By having access to a Nook eReader, I can encourage the struggling reader in a less threatening way to read. The idea of opening a book can cause anxiety in the struggling reader. By having the option of using a Nook for that student, the student has the option to read in a less stressful way. The goal is to reach out to every single student in any way that will enforce the importance of reading, encourage them to read, and to improve their knowledge.

Getting students to read is a challenge.

They are faced with technology in every aspect of life; school cannot be any different. There is a stigma to picking up a book for some, but that stigma isn't there if they pick up a Nook. My students will be reading, that is what matters. A Nook in place of a book will get them to read. Help me make better readers out of them.
