My Students
Technology is moving so fast and becoming apart of everyday routines for many of my students. Connecting with my students, I want to incorporate more devices into the classroom that will continue to open up the exciting world of learning through hands on and touch.
I work with students who have mild to high functioning autism, ranging from second through fifth grade.
In working with this population, every student with Autism is different; you have to find out their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. There needs to be consistency and structured activities that are predictable. Providing an environment that contains visual supports allows the students to be aware of the expectations and routines throughout the day. Students with autism also tend to have difficulty with social and communication development, which may cause inappropriate behaviors or interactions among their peers and environment. Not being able to effectively express their concerns or deal with unexpected changes results in rising anxiety causing those students to stop functioning.
My Project
Being exposed to a world of technology, I would like to incorporate another tool (an iPad) into instruction through the use of presenting material during whole group instruction. Students will be able to become interactive with the device as they stand in front of the class. During small group instruction, students will be able to cooperatively work together on skills taught within the class and create projects through the use of the video camera and audio recording. Addressing individual needs, students will be able to have access to material at their independent levels allowing for practice and remediation on a variety of educational apps available. The iPad can open the door to so many possibilities and creativity.
In working with students with Autism, it is important to connect with their interests and provide ample opportunities of hands on experiences and visual activities.
With the iPad, all modalities will be met and my students will become more motivated,excited, and engaged with their work.
