Caldecotts and Classics Needed for our Collection!
My students need sparkling new classic picture books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar to read for pleasure and to make connections to the curriculum.
The students in my library are joyful at book check-out time. They excitedly examine displayed books and use shelf-markers to select books on the shelves. But some of the greatest books are also the most worn out so children do not find them as appealing as they should--let's remedy this!
We are a high poverty area and many of my students live in very challenging circumstances, with little or no access to educational materials at home.
They develop an appreciation very quickly of their school library and all that it offers them, including excellent children's literature. They soon love to read because of this easy access to a wide variety of wonderful books! But sadly, some of our most loved stories are now worn, torn, and taped. They must be discarded because they are falling apart. Please help us replace them AND add newly released Caldecott winners to our collection! Our students deserve to read and enjoy these books in the sparkling way that their gifted authors and illustrators intended.
My Project
My students will be able to develop a love of the classics and newer excellent books through using their school library. Many are exposed only to television or video game characters and plots at home; these students need the opportunity to enjoy the works of gifted authors and illustrators who have stood the test of time and continue to teach and delight children in 2015. Many of these books have deep themes, such as love, compassion, tolerance, family, friendship, pets, dealing with anxiety and fear, care of the natural world, appreciation of human diversity, and understanding of history. Students not only enjoy these stories, they develop their own moral character through exposure to them. All of these fictional books connect to the curriculum in important and engaging ways, and teachers create many learning activities around them. Always, these classics are presented in a sensitive and engaging way for very young readers.
My students are deserving of the very best that children's literature has to offer, in sparkling condition--as the stories were intended to be seen and read.
They will reap the benefits of exposure to, and reflection on, the important themes of these great stories. Furthermore, they will be able to extend their understanding of them through a variety of creative projects, including writing and drawing, puppetry and dramatics, and research of personal interest.
