My Students

"To learn to read well, all students need to read thought-provoking, age-appropriate books. They also need to respond thoughtfully to these books in talk, writing, and as they read other texts." ~ Raphael, Taffy E., et al. "Book Club Plus: A Conceptual Framework to Organize Literacy Instruction."

Our fourth and fifth grade students come from a very diverse community in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Approximately 50% are English Language Learners and over 60% qualify for free or reduced lunch. They are excited about learning and working together with their classmates.

My Project

I am requesting 20 copies each of "Wonder," "The Unwanteds," "Wild Wings," "Tuesdays at the Castle," and "Turtle in Paradise" for our fourth and fifth grade book clubs. Small groups of students will meet to discuss literature. These Book Clubs allow students to become critical thinkers as they read, share thoughts, ask questions, and respond to reading selections. Some of the most critical skills learned from Book Clubs are collaboration, critical thinking, and reading stamina. These students will participate in the California Young Readers Medal (CYRM) program by voting for their favorite book.

The books selected for these reading clubs are nominees for the California Young Readers Medal (CYRM) program.

This program "encourages recreational reading of popular literature among the young people of our state." The students will read the three nominees for 2015 and vote for their favorite book. They will also read the 2014 winner and one other nominee.
