Working in a high needs area, my students have a constant need for technology and information. These students are very inquisitive and demand a lot of attention. Many students want to do well. Our big goal this year is building literacy and spelling. I want my students to succeed and do well.
Our school is in a high-poverty area.
The students are constantly seeking information and approval; sadly, some do not know how to ask for what they want or need, or they are too embarrassed to ask. I would love a way for them to seek information in a fun, efficient way! The students are energetic, lively, and good-natured, but require more than our school budget can provide for them. I have so many students that can prosper and do well if given the proper tools and advantages to do so. I do not want something as simple as low funds to hold a student back from achieving greatness or success. I do not want my students that are in areas of high-poverty to see money as a barrier, but rather, as a minor obstacle. Our school in high-poverty, so the students need every chance they can get to succeed. We also serve English learners, that I believe need all the vocabulary and spelling support available to them.
We do a lot of reading, writing, and cooperative learning in my classroom. I have to pause a lot to spell words or pull dictionaries for students to use. Some students (many students) do not ask for help spelling or defining a word because in their "high-tech, knowledge is readily available" minds, dictionaries seem like fossils! I want to get electronic dictionaries to help my students define words quickly! We have so much to learn, and I don't want something as simple as a book or looking a word up to hold them back. Also, checking spelling is a nice, added bonus so that students may check the spelling of words as they write or check other student's writing. This will help improve their spelling and understanding of words they may not have thought to look up before. Students need electronic dictionaries in my classroom to help build their vocabulary and spelling skills.
This project will improve my classroom by allowing my students to build vocabulary and spelling skills.
This is extremely important for making sure that our students are college and career ready. One of the biggest problem that young readers face is context clues. I don't want a misunderstood word to hold my students back from understanding a reading assignment.
