My students need "Time Timers" as they are visual timers that assist students with autism, intellectual disabilities and hearing impairments. They also need batteries.

My Students

I am a vocational coordinator that assists students in gaining volunteer experiences that lead to competitive employment in their local community. Students need visual timers to replace prompting from staff, therefore increasing their independence in community-based work sites.

I am the Vocational Coordinator for 24 students ages 14-21.

My students have intellectual disabilities and are a part of the Life Skills Program at U. High School. 16 of my students have job placements in the community at grocery stores, child daycare centers, coffee shops, sandwich shops, care facilities, cafeterias and small offices. Many of my students need to improve their self-monitoring skills in order to work more independently. They have difficulty telling time on analog clocks at their work sites and need a visual reminder of how much time they have left on a job task. Having Time Timers will also allow my job coaches to fade out of the immediate work area so that students can visually self-prompt to keep themselves on-task.

My Project

My students will learn how to track how much time they have left on individual job tasks at their work sites before moving on to a new task. Many of my students are working on increasing time-on-task for a variety of job tasks as well as total time working before taking a break. Students must work a minimum of 2 hours per day to be considered eligible for future part-time competitive employment.

This project will make a huge difference in the quality of life for students with disabilities.

Many students leave high school without the opportunity for competitive employment. My students want to be contributing members of society and an integral part of their community. And working for a competitive wage is their goal; it is also their right.
