My students need nonfiction books in order to meet the new Common Core State Standards and explore the world. Please help beef up our nonfiction collection.
"There is more treasure in books than in all the loot on Treasure Island." -Walt Disney
Help us build a treasure trove of books for our students to discover by building our book room collection.
Our school has 551 students in PreK - grade 5.
Our elementary school is connected to a public library and a middle school. We are a hub of community activity. We are racially and ethnically diverse. Our Limited English Proficient students are Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander. We have several self contained classrooms working with students who may be physically or mentally handicapped. Our school has a large walk zone and many families walk or ride bikes to school.
Our students love music, art, dance, science experiments, reading, writing, and their teachers. Parents are supportive and make every effort to be involved in school life. 100% of our classrooms are taught by highly qualified teachers. 38% have advanced degrees and over half of our teachers have taught for three years with almost 42% having 10 years+ teaching experience. This faculty is trained and ready to implement the new Common Core State Standards.
My Project
Skateboarding, climbing a tree, making a ladder, devising a pulley system to pull snacks to your treehouse...these ideas spark the imagination and cause students to inquire about levers, fulcrums, pivots, ramps, etc. Creating a research project on an animal found at the zoo using books about wild animals, wild cats, and elephants growing up...Getting the scoop on soil, rocks, and minerals. My students need the books to study Rain Forest animals, space, holidays around the world and how these holidays reflect our culture.
Kindergarten students anxiously await the study of weather from studying why we blow 'dragon smoke' when it is cold outside to the wacky phenomena of hailstorms and hurricanes. Books bring all of the world to us and with them our children experience being a policeman, firewoman, meteorologist, archaeologist, detective, scientist, author, and lover of all things interesting to our imaginations. Our students in grade K-5 will learn to thirst and love knowledge!
At every grade level we have a science unit for each month of school but we do not have the books needed to give all students access to knowledge.
Because each class has a range of reading levels we need a continuum of informational texts written for our diverse population of readers. Books in the book room are used by every student in every classroom. The book room may be one of the few resources with the potential to touch every student within our doors. By donating, you can be a part of this exciting work!
