Building on the Basics to Improve Reading & Math Skills!
My students need ABC Cookies and Pop for Letters to practice letter-sound correlation & improve reading skills. My students need math manips like Number Bugs to meet CCS.
First grade has changed a lot over the years. The students are expected to achieve more than ever before. How can they do this without being provided the materials to do it?
My students are in a high poverty public school that is over 70% low income.
This is something that already puts them at a disadvantage. They are not able to get extra materials at home to continue learning what has been introduced at school. For this reason, I want to be able to expose them to as many learning opportunities as possible! It is in my classroom where they get to take risks and open their minds to new learning experiences! I need your help to give them all of these experiences!
My Project
My students have 60 minutes of math instruction each day. During this time they are exposed to calendar, number sense, addition, subtraction, fractions, shapes, and the list goes on! Some students struggle with basic number sense and because of this, later struggle with addition and subtraction. Items like the Number Bugs will help reinforce basic number sense so that more difficult concepts won't be so difficult later on in the year and in later grades.
My students have 110 minutes of reading instruction each day. During this time they listen to reading, they have independent & guided reading time, they have station time, and they have word work time. Items like the Letter Link crabs will allow students to practice their letters, their sounds, and how to put them together to make words. These are skills that they need to develop and master in order to become great readers.
In math and in reading, the requested items will help to reinforce the basics so that we can build upon them!
As previously stately, most of my students come from low income homes.
Unfortunately, they do not have activities and manipulatives, like the ones requested, that they can use at home. Donations to this project will help my students master the basics in reading and math to help them become stronger and more confident learners in the classroom!
