Building Literacy Basics in Kindergarten!

My students need primary composition books for daily writing, an ABC puzzle, a magnetic write and wipe sentence mat, alphabet sounds reinforced with objects, and picture name tags to begin the year.

My Students

I'm a new kindergarten teacher at a school that serves a diverse population of English language learners. As I transition to a new school, I want to create a strong foundation for my students. They will need hands-on activities to help reinforce phonemic awareness and writing skills in kindergarten.

I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with a diverse population of students who are from Asia, Africa, Mexico, as well as students from North Carolina.

This diverse setting is rewarding and both challenging due to the many different learning styles of students. I have an exciting group of seventeen kindergartners, where eight of my students are English language learners. While my students are thirsty to learn, they face challenges as they gain an understanding of the English language while meeting grade level expectations. These materials I am requesting will create the foundation needed for students to meet and exceed goals for the school year.

My Project

I am asking for materials to use to reinforce letter recognition and phonemic awareness for the start of the school year. I am requesting an alphabet phone center so my students are able to hear themselves say the sounds as they read. I have also requested an ABC floor puzzle which will reinforce the sequence of the alphabet with pictures to correspond with the letter sounds, and a mystery box which will include alphabet letters to match each object. Hands-on experiences are important for early learners to make the connections with sounds and letters. I have requested a set of ten primary composition journals, along with a teacher magnetic write and wipe mat which will be used for small group work on daily writing. These resources will encourage correct letter formation during writing. These resources are important so I will be able to create small group lessons, as well as work to go in centers. These materials encourage independence as my students build the strong foundation needed for pre-reading.

Donations to my project will allow me to be an effective teacher by providing language resources to build a strong foundation in writing and pre-reading.

I believe it is important to provide lots of hands-on experiences so students can make the connection. These materials will support my students' needs and provide reinforcement in language and writing skills daily. Your support will lay the foundation needed in language and writing so they have a successful kindergarten school year.
