Building Confidence In Math, One Graphing Calculator At A Time

My students need a class set of graphing calculators, enough for all 25 students to have one on which to work.

My Students

It is so fulfilling to watch kids get excited to be in math class. By the time students are in Algebra, they need to be able to graph equations easily and visually see relationships. The use of technology in the classroom helps me make the math concepts more tangible and more approachable.

My school district spans a large area; we are about an hour and a half, over the mountains, from the main offices.

We are a small middle school and yet we are able to offer students math at one or two levels above grade level. Of all our district middle schools, we have the highest percentage of students taking advanced math. I love teaching middle school. My students are fun, creative and determined. Most students come from blue-collar families. About twenty percent of our students are Alaskan Natives; we have a slightly larger percentage of low-income families. The cost of living is quite high here and while most students can afford basic school supplies (supplemented by teacher-purchased spare supplies), the more expensive items like graphing calculators or Kindles are not attainable within the budget of many local families.

My Project

Our state has just adopted the Common Core and we are adapting to the new curriculum. The students in my Pre-Algebra and my Algebra classes are being asked more and more to look for and describe relationships between equations. Students are best able to see the connections (or lack there of) when they have the right tools in hand. For math, the best tool is a Graphing Calculator. I envision students coming into class, picking up a calculator on the way to their seats and using this tool throughout many of our year-long lessons. I want the students to get comfortable with the calculator and be confident in their ability to use many of the various functions. Specifically, I want the students to be able to input several equations, have the calculator graph them and then zoom in to find the solutions points (where the lines intersect). I also want the students to be able to use the statistic keys to easily determined the probability of an event. I want them to feel successful.

When students are equipped with the correct tools, they feel more confident.

A survey of my math classes today revealed that about 1/3 of the class felt like math was a struggle and another 1/3 thought math was just okay. I think that I can change the students' perception of math if I am able to teach them with graphing calculators. By using technology to replace the tedious operations and tiny mistakes that tend to make students feel defeated, my students will have a positive math attitude.
