I want each of my students to be successful individuals and to see that each and everyone of them are capable of achieving this! My students will see that there are other ways to measure understanding besides being given a paper/pencil test.
I teach in a Title I school where most of the students come from broken families and unstable living conditions.
Ninety eight percent of my students are on free and reduced lunch and lack many of their everyday essential needs. I have done my best to provide for these students, even if it means at times I have gone with less. However, there is only so much I can do as an individual. I love all of my students, and I want to expose them to every little thing possible because I know they may never get the experiences or opportunities that I would love for all them to have.
My students struggle a great deal with reading comprehension. As a young child this is crucial piece in reading. Lego's have been something that I have found my students thoroughly enjoy playing with. I have realized that not only can my students play with Lego's they can also demonstrate their understanding of the text through the art of building. As my students read they can build models of their understanding by creating the setting, beginning, middle, and end of their story. The opportunities are endless as my students can even take their imagination to the next level like answering higher level thinking questions such as making models of their predictions throughout their stories.
This donation of the Lego Story Starter Kit will not only support the 21st century skills my students need it will also allow them to see learning through a whole different lens.
My students will be able to use their imagination, demonstrate their understanding, and create their vision through technology. Learning should continue to be fun for my students without feeling like everyday understanding is measured by a paper pencil test. This kit allows them to learn and through the art of play!
