My Students
My classroom is not just a room - it's a community - and my students are not just kids - we're family. Having somewhere to gather as a family is very important to my students and me, and critical in their success.
I teach first grade at a very low-income, rural school.
Many of my students face a variety of challenges at home. My goal is to create a safe, friendly environment for these students to learn and grow as individuals. Despite many of the personal struggles my students face at home, their love for learning is apparent the second they walk through the door. They genuinely love school and love exploring the world around them. They also love being a part of such a close-knit group that we've created at our school.
My Project
By obtaining a classroom rug, large enough for all of my students to sit together, we will be able to continue to build our classroom community. We currently have tile floors in our classroom, which is great for cleaning, but sometimes lacks the "homey" feel I would like to encompass in my room. It is important for me to give my students space where they feel comfortable reading, learning, and communicating with their friends. Having a nice area rug will allow us to gather in one common place for Morning Meeting. Here we will be able to greet each other, discuss important news about our upcoming day, and share things with each other ultimately building positive communication skills. This area rug will also serve as a great place for students to gather for a class read aloud or even for independent reading time. I've requested the United States rug which can also serve as a social studies and geography teaching tool.
Donating to my project will help my students by improving our classroom community.
Having a common place in the room to gather as a whole class group will help my students with their interpersonal relationships with one another, their communication, and their collaboration skills.
