Building Character Books for 2nd Grade Characters

My students need books that help encourage character building and use of appropriate social skills.

My Students

We all know that kids in school are learning to read. In my second grade class, we are also reading to learn. I am looking for books that are of high interest to young, new readers. I am also in need of books that teach the complicated social skills that young children are working on daily.

Second graders students are a curious, active and fun group of kids.

I could go on and on explaining how great second grade kids are. Students in our district come from diverse backgrounds consisting English language learners, special needs students, students from various family dynamics and abilities.

My Project

I use books that teach social skills at the beginning of the school year to establish a climate of respect. Reading books by Julia Cook help to spark discussion about appropriate behavior and feelings and how we would like our classroom environment to be a place where everyone is respected and valued. We would also use these books throughout the year as a refresher when we could use a reminder of appropriate 2nd grade behavior and how it impacts others.

It can be tough being a kid these days.

Kids deal with situations and pressures that most adults couldn't imagine as a child. If my project is funded, I will use these Julia Cook books as a way to help students learn from situations and give them the knowledge to deal with these tough situations.
