Let's build it! Students in my class will be spending their 2nd Trimester focused on physical science, and learning about balancing, forces, and bridges! Students will be challenged with creating a bridge that will hold a determined weight, span a given length, and withstand extreme weather!
Students in my 2nd grade classroom engage in STEM activities daily.
Part of our school goals include helping students learn how to build, create, collaborate, and contribute to the community where they live. I strive to provide them with opportunities, materials, and experiences where they can learn through projects and real-world connections.
My Project
Students will be learning about the social, political, economic, and scientific principles associated with bridge building. They will be exploring bridges not only in their own community, but also in communities around the world. We will be reading fictional and nonfictional texts, solving math problems in the context of bridge building, and exploring the science behind bridge building. Students will be challenged with creating a model bridge that will hold a determined weight, span a given length, withstand severe weather conditions, and meet the design, aesthetic, and cost requirements of the project. Through existing technologies, students will be able to simulate the test factors for their bridges. The students need materials to be able to create different types of bridges in order to fully understand the scientific principles of how a bridge is built and functions. We need materials for students to build scale models of bridges for exploration. My students need 5 Knex Bridge Building Kits to help them learn about balancing, forces, bridges, and the Engineering Design process.
By providing students with high-interest, hands-on STEM experiences in elementary school, we hope to harness the natural curiosity and creativity of our students to foster a passion for learning and an awareness of a variety of careers in STEM fields that will lead them to pursue careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
