I hear from students and parents alike, "I've never liked math, I've never been good at it." I think students at a young age need to create a positive relationship with math. I want to help my students by giving them ways to explore math and be successful, so that they will learn to love math!
My students come from many different backgrounds, including some who are new to the United States.
Many students in our school are learning English as a second language. Every student in our school is given free breakfast and lunch, due to the low socioeconomic status of our school population. Our school also has an on-site food bank for families who need that support. I would describe our school as diverse and a definite asset to our community. We have family events throughout the year and have built strong relationships with our families. We have amazing students, and I want them to have access to the resources that will help them be the most successful.
My Project
The pattern blocks, Cuisenaire rods, place value blocks, and a hundreds pocket chart I am asking for will be used, in some way, in the majority of our math lessons throughout the year. They will help students create concrete representations to abstract concepts. They will give extra scaffolding and support to students who need it. These tools will help students problem solve and find patterns that they can apply to other mathematical concepts. My responsibility is to help students solidify and expand their skills so that they will be successful in their future education.
This project will allow my students to build skills, become confident mathematicians, and hopefully help them foster a love of math.
They do not often have access to the tools I would like to make available to them. They are building skills that will carry them through their education and life, and I want to help prepare them in the most effective way I can.
