Building a Library STEM Makerspace Can Be a Snap!

My Students

The library is the living room of our school. Our library space is small, but well-used, inviting, and active. It's the place to be! My hope is that students will have the chance to work on projects that interest them, to enhance their learning, and be creative.

There are about 475 students at our suburban elementary school.

They come from diverse backgrounds, languages, and income levels. They are inquisitive, supportive of each other. They love to learn and are excited about technology. I see every class once a week for library-information-technology lessons. Students also come to the library before school and during open recess times. Students also come to the library to work on special projects.

My Project

We will use the Snap Circuits to launch our Library STEM makerspace. Students will be able to work with the kits during open library times to develop their skills and create new experiences with circuitry. Students can teach and learn from each other as they work their way through the set projects in the kit, as well as, create their own projects. If they don't grow up to become electrical engineers, they will learn to work with grids, follow steps and directions, put pieces together in various ways to create a whole, and work in a team.

Currently, each classroom at our school has only two science units per year.

Batteries and bulbs, a unit that teaches about electronics, is taught during 4th grade. This is the only chance students have to work in this area from kindergarten to 6th grade. This project will serve as an opportunity for students to extend their learning, work cooperatively with others, create and recreate projects, and reinforce the science they have learned.
