Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The strains and stresses of poverty in the urban community that surrounds our school in North Minneapolis, adversely effects the insight and interests of the students in my classroom. Developing an engaging literacy program can be the intervention toward better prevention that fits my community.
My students attend a charter school in North Minneapolis Minnesota.
The demographics of the school are quite multicultural comprised of Hmong, African Americans, White, American Indians, Somali, Hispanics and multiracial. The school has an emphasis on science and math and provides incentives for students to be rewarded for their effort and success in learning. Living in the grips of poverty or in a socioeconomic state boarding on poverty, gives families considerably fewer avenues to improve their situation. Students in these situations remain vulnerable to gangs and the self destructive perspective, crime and delinquency they influence. Many of the students come from homes where an older sibling is in charge of the household while the parent is working. In these homes students are have no parental support in the areas of education, nutrition and personal care. This is evident in my classroom on a daily basis and I find it important to embed these skills in our daily schedule.
My Project
Prevention is the key and can be achieved through an engaging language arts program in the most important year of a students life...kindergarten! With tools that could captivate a variety of needs of the vast diversity of student learners that walk through my door, student stamina can be developed and realized. The hands on equipment I am requesting can be used in small group and large group settings. Dwindling funds in the area of early childhood education , have left most students who enter kindergarten in my school with no preschool experience and therefore are behind and have many skills to learn. Fine motor skills and alphabetic knowledge are two key areas I find myself needing engaging tools for. Such tools will transform my classroom into an environment that will inspire my students to look forward to attending school on a daily basis. Games and books the students do not have at home will ignite their love of literacy and reading and have a lasting positive effect on them
Literacy is a skill that research states will impact a child in many positive ways.
Literacy impacts a child's chances for avoiding the pathway to gangs and the juvenal justice system and increases their chances for becoming a successful citizen. The development of strong literacy skills will enable these kids to become not only good role models for others but will empower them with the ability to become effective teachers to others in their home environment resulting in a huge impact for all.
