My students need the paper drive to change backgrounds safely. They need the spotlight and gels to understand lighting. They need light stands to mount and control light.
A typical day in our classroom is fast-paced with complex new skills to learn and to practice and to comprehend and apply. An outsider may see chaos on lab days with everyone working at different levels on different projects to reach their own personal project goals, order exists to the discerning.
The students I serve are in grades 9 through 12.
For some this is the only successful part of their day. They can create, they can express, they are not judged nor evaluated in the same way they may be in other classes. I am often surprised to find out an A+ student of mine is struggling to pass in their other classes. I have students who not only span ages 14 -19, but I also have students who span the gamut from AP and Honor students to special education students; this includes students with autism, emotional disturbances, and learning disabilities. I strive to create a classroom environment where all can learn and find success if they participate and desire to learn.
My Project
The students will use the resources provided through this generous gift to engage in hands-on learning experiences in the classroom. I am in the arduous process of flipping my classroom. I am learning more and more through research and through attending conferences and seminars and teacher led trainings to make this an effective and powerful change. This reorganization of teaching allows time in class for more engaging hands-on experiences for the students and many more interactive activities. The studio created by these materials will provide powerful and meaningful and ongoing learning in this extra class time. The students will use this in-class studio to learn photographic techniques, to experiment with lighting, and to create unique photographs through this experimentation. This in-class studio will also provide access to many students who would otherwise not have access to such materials thus allowing their passion for photography to grow and develop further.
Donations to this project will allow all students access to photographic lighting and studio equipment that they would not otherwise have access to.
It will allow all students to have the repetitive practice and experience necessary to become more skilled at not only photography, but also at working in a group and as part of a team and in developing concepts and plans and in devising experiments to test their theories in terms of lighting, framing, subject matter, and camera angles.
