Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Weekly over 400 students visit the art room in grades K-5 with imaginative thought and an eagerness to create. These learners love experimenting with new art media and tools such as painting, clay, sculpture, collage. Throughout the year they engage in artist studies and make real life connections.
My students are energetic, curious and open to taking creative risks to learn a new skill.
They pride themselves on their imaginative and critical thinking and this translates to their connections they make to art outside of the classroom. The majority of the students receive free school lunch and are English Language Learners. Despite some hardship school is a place where my students look forward to coming to gain new skills and work diligently to their highest potential. This is demonstrated in the several acknowledgments our school has received state wide for high performances on assessments and adjusting instruction to meet the range of learners' needs.
My Project
Students in each grade will use the materials to learn about artists, careers in the art, how to mix colors in a painting unit, and explore themes such as Pop art and Egyptian culture. Specifically, third grade classes will participate in a social studies lesson exploring art's role in Ancient Egyptian culture as they scratch into paper and carve into clay. Lower grade classes will continue to explore color theory through instruction and experimentation with mixing paint to carry out painting lessons. Students in upper grades will be able to review and assess their skills and knowledge after a unit of study using the review bingo. 5th graders will begin a unit of study on Pop Art and artist Andy Warhol then create their own paintings in this style. Second grade students will be exploring the different careers in art. This unit will begin with a focus on architecture and through a drawing and design lesson. The paper, art career cards, and light box will help support their learning.
Providing access to art tools and resources allows students to learn in the least restrictive and supportive environment to foster new skills.
Students will be able to explore materials by learning through a range of modalities that engages and motivates them. These materials will allow students to meet NYS Learning Standards for the Arts and Blueprint Standards for the Arts, foster creativity, confidence, and increase their ability to synthesize and apply learning in their art making process.
