Bringing Latin America to the Classroom

My Students

My goal as a middle school Spanish teacher is to move away from old language strategies of memorization (rote learning) and into a more fun, hands-on approach to language learning. Using primary sources from everyday life, my kids are able to learn through first-hand experiences rather than a book.

The majority of my students (and their families) come from other countries; therefore, they speak multiple languages at a young age.

For them, it is easier to learn Spanish through everyday life as opposed to a normal classroom setting. Since we can't leave the building, I bring the Spanish speaking world to them with technology. My kids might not have much money, but they are very enthusiastic and super eager to learn.

My Project

With these tablets, I will be able to bring the Spanish speaking world to the classroom. My students will be able to use them in daily stations, which will incorporate reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities from primary sources. My students want to speak and write with real Spanish speakers. They can use Skype and many other apps to communicate with the outside world. I taught in Chile while in college and still have connections with the teachers who teach English year. Doing a Spanish-English Skype exchange would be the perfect tool to encourage second-language learning!

This project will help my kids realize that what they are learning in the classroom can actually be used in real life.

My students will realize the importance of speaking different languages and prepare them for the new global world. Through the use of technology, our resources for communication and production will be ENDLESS!!!!
