Mr. Cunningham from Jersey City NJ is requesting a classroom visitor through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need an outdoor adventure that is accessible to scores of them to experience rappelling with both their peers and the community watching.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Students in the school's Wilderness Club take on intimidating outdoor challenges. They have hiked up a mountain in intense heat, rappelled down a daunting rock, and snowshoed through deep snow in single digit weather. Their determination is inspiring, but I am only able to reach 40 students a year.
Wilderness Club follows an experiential educational model to teach teamwork and character through outdoor adventure.
Students begin apprehensive but finish proud and accomplished. The school's students rarely leave their inner-city neighborhood. Many view the great outdoors as something they will never be able to experience. The school is located in a tight-knit community that suffers from high crime rates. Despite this, many students look for inspiration everyday. They crave new experiences not readily available to them and are willing to work hard to prepare for these experiences. Students volunteer to raise funds for club trips. Many fundraise while balancing the responsibility of working to contribute to their family's income and taking care of siblings. Unfortunately, logistics make it impossible for more than 20 students to attend a trip at a time. Other students become excited about the prospect of joining a trip but remain intimidated about leaving the familiarity of their neighborhoods.
Your donation will help fund the hiring of professional guides to bring an outdoor adventure to the school so that participation will not remain limited to just 20 students. Instead, over 150 students will get to experience rappelling down the side of the school. Facing the daunting physical challenge of rappelling, students will learn to harness focus under intimidating conditions while at the same time overcoming fears and obstacles. Encouraged by their peers and the community, they will learn commitment and perseverance.
With students challenged to focus and concentrate at such heights, the rush of reaching the bottom safely that much greater.
Among the cheers of the community, they will be able to experience the thrill of success that comes with hard work and determination. This will instill positive character development through actively engaging students. It will promote confidence, consideration for peers, passion for the community, and resilience both as individuals and as part of a group.
