Bring Historical Fiction To Our Revolutionary War Unit
My students need a class set of "My Brother Sam is Dead" and a class set of "Chains" to support our 5th Grade American Revolution Unit. The additional eBooks will support learning.
Do you remember what it was like to study a history unit that was from an era so long ago? My students need to learn about the Revolutionary War and what better way to do so by adding in two books set in the time frame of the American Revolution!
I currently teach a fifth grade gifted and talented magnet classroom.
My students are 10 and 11 years old who read well beyond the fifth grade level. It is often difficult to find books that are not only level appropriate but also age appropriate for the advanced levels to which they read. We live in a middle to low income neighborhood where 38% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Let's face it, schools have cut back on the money put forth towards classroom supplies and materials while teachers are demanded to push students to perform well on academic tests. Teaching gifted and talented students requires teachers to find additional supplies and materials to enhance the learning of their students who need further challenges.
My Project
The class books I'm requesting are middle school leveled books that help support the American Revolution which is a standard we must learn during fifth grade. Chains speaks through the eyes of a young girl slave during the American Revolution who finds herself a spy for the rebels while under ownership of a mean loyalist family. My Brother Sam is Dead sees the American Revolution through the eyes of a young boy from a loyalist family living in Connecticut where he chronicles the events of the Revolution after learning his brother has chosen to fight against the British which enrages his family. These books are not only level appropriate but also age appropriate as they show aspects of the American Revolution through the eyes of children around the same age as my students. These two stories will help open my students' eyes to the themes and problems encountered during the American Revolution. The eBooks will help supply materials for my students to show their learning from the unit.
This project is important because it allows all of my students to be able to connect to the American Revolution.
This unit is such a vital piece of American History and if you don't live in New England, you can't truly get a feel for what life was once like. This is my favorite unit to teach as I am originally from New Hampshire and now teaching in the West Coast. The American Revolution is what shaped us to be the country we are today!
