BOOM! POW! Room 101 is Throwing Up the Reading Signal!!!
My students need multiple books that have characters of different races in which they can identify with and relate to. My students need 40 books to improve literacy skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students experience harsh realities on a daily basis, now it is time to show them the wonderful escape of reading and the joys of being a young child! I have learned that you can bring a book to students but you can't always get them to love the book.
I have the most amazing group of kindergarten students!
We were a class together last year and I am so lucky to be moving up with them to K5! Our school is located in high poverty urban neighborhood in Milwaukee where almost all students are on assistance and free lunch programs. Our school has recently become an arts school in which we have a full time music, art and physical education teacher at our school. We are encouraged to integrate arts into our lessons and daily activities. My students have fallen in love with comic books and superheroes! At first I included a few comics as a reward for my students who listened but I soon realized that my students had a genuine interest in these books so I have found ways to integrate specific books into my lessons and activities. I honestly cannot say enough about how great my kids are, they love to have fun and they are game for anything I bring into the classroom. We all trust one another when it comes to learning and reading!
My Project
My students need multiple books that have characters of different races in which they can identify with and relate to. My students need 40 books to improve literacy skills. These comic books have been specifically picked out by myself to incorporate into my literacy curriculum. First the books will be used in large group format in which we will read them together and use them to build our literacy skills such as predicting what will happen, identify characters and settings and sequence the book as well. In small group stations the books will be put in the classroom library and reading area for the students to explore and build their literacy skills on as well. In the writing stations children will use the books as inspiration to make their own books or stories using similar templates and new vocabulary words. We will also use the books to introduce the students to onomatopoeia words, sentence structure and story flow. We will also use the books to learn about the differences between fiction and non fiction. Finally I specifically picked out books with characters of multiple races to represent my students in the classroom.
This will change my students lives because it is a unique approach to introducing young children to wonderful world of reading.
My students have been so excited to read different comic books especially those that have characters of African American descent, they are able to see people like themselves be the stars and heroes of the book. I want them to understand that they can be the stars and heroes of the real world. It will also open up their imaginations and allow their creativity to shine!
