Like most second grade classrooms, the students in my classroom are learning to become better readers. We have time in class to read everyday; whether it is alone, with a buddy or with me. Reading is something we constantly make time for.
I have diverse group of students who are very loving, energetic, and hard-working.
They are a creative and curious bunch who aren't afraid to try new things. I have a wide range of readers, some reading at a kinder level and some reading way above second grade level. The school that I'm at understands the importance of creating a caring environment where everyone is valued for their differences. It is a community-oriented school that works hard to meet the needs of all students.
My Project
I am requesting specific books to be used during Daily 5, a framework to help students develop lifelong reading and writing skills. These books will be used as read-alouds to help teach students learn and build various reading comprehension strategies. For instance, the book "Stellaluna" would be used to teach students about connection strategies. Students would be asked to explain how the main character feels and describe moments where they might have faced a similar situation. I plan to use these books throughout the year to help my students become stronger readers and build their love for reading.

Reading is the foundation to all the subjects in school and I strive everyday to help my students become better readers.
This project would help to build a stronger reading curriculum in my classroom. Each book would be used to not only teach a specific reading comprehension strategy, but it would help introduce my students to a whole range of different texts.
