Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"The only way to get better at reading is by reading!"
The best way I have found for my students to grow as readers is to allow them ample time to read books they love. Each day in my class, my 7th graders find a comfortable spot and read for 20 minutes from a book of their own choosing.
My students are amazing thirteen-year-olds, awkwardly attempting the task of growing up.
My approximately 100 seventh graders have a wide variety of personalities and interests. They are funny, opinionated, thoughtful, and are trying to make sense of the world around them.
My Project
The books I have selected such as Lola Zola and the Lemonade Crush, Sweet Treats & Secret Crushes for this project are highly engaging novels. The students will read these books both in class during independent reading time and at home. My students are most engaged by books with relatable characters like New Girl on Salt Flat Road and The Kind of Friends We Used to Be they can see themselves in. The books I have chosen for this project are all middle school specific novels that will get students excited about reading.
Studies of adolescent readers continuously show that one of the best ways to improve their reading ability is for them to read more.
While it sounds obvious and simple, the major hurdle in getting students to read more is having access to engaging and relevant books that spark their interest and get them hooked on reading. All of the books for this project like The Rot & Ruin Collection: Rot & Ruin; Dust & Decay; Flesh & Bone; Fire & Ash are highly engaging non-fiction texts that get my students excited about reading.
