My Students

My 1st , 2nd and 3rd grade Special Education, Emotional Needs students struggle with learning daily. Sometimes, they give up because the challenge is too much for them. Integrating hands on learning activities helps build their confidence and allows them to show what they know in different way.

I teach in a large, diverse K-8 high poverty, school in a high crime area of Philadelphia.

100% of them are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The children come to school eager to learn from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters, or extended family living. They have various abilities and I strive to build their confidence in what they can do, not emphasize what they can't do. On average, each student is at least 2 grade levels below where they should be in reading and math. In addition to having challenging home and neighborhood issues, my students have emotional needs that require frequent and varied activity in the classroom. They need to get up and move within their day; they need to work with different materials to express themselves. I am dedicated to meeting those needs daily along with building their self esteem and confidence to learn.

My Project

The magnetic tiles that I am requesting will be used in a number of different ways. First, they are different shapes which will help the children see the shape, feel the shape and explore different ways to use the shape in building structures with the blocks. Second, the magnetic tiles are different colors which will help them in distinguishing between the many different colors. Third, the magnetic tiles are transparent which will allow for overlapping different colors to see how new colors are created. Finally, the magnetic tiles will be used for fun. Who knows, maybe a future architect will develop from playing with the magnetic tiles. I want them to understand that anything they can see in their imagination can come to life with the right tools!

Your donations will help to create future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians that can dive into the design process by making predictions, testing theories, and ultimately designing and building more efficient designs.

From real-world challenges that ask students to plan, build and test everything from a stronger bridge to a more aerodynamic plane…to exciting books that explore the science behind so many questions they have, this project will teach students how amazing STEM fields are.
