Blowing Up for Fish Friends

We need a marine tank so that we can raise lionfish, triggerfish and pufferfish (marine predators).

About My Students

These ladies fell in love with some marine predators at our recent aquarium field trip.

They wanted to create a display tank much like the aquarium, within our Marine Biology classroom. They will need materials (and fish) in order to make this happen. I suggested they create a project for the needed materials. They have contacted a local vendor.

Academically, they will be learning about adaptations, food webs, and water chemistry through this classroom aquarium. They will build the necessary networking and fundraising skills by funding this project themselves that are necessary for real-life.

In Their Own Words

We are trying to create a healthy, sustainable predator fish tank for our Marine Biology class. Our ultimate goal is to learn the importance and all the responsibility that come with maintaining and keeping a fish tank with live fish. We also want other students in our school to be inspired and want to learn about the ocean and all of its creatures and how to care for the ocean now and for future generations.

Our group wants to obtain all the materials necessary to make our tank a good living space for our fish. We plan on learning all the components necessary to maintain a good water chemistry that will allow the fish to thrive. Most importantly, if we get the tank, we will educate others (through interpretive displays) about everything in the tank.

This project is important to us because we want to learn about the importance of maintaining sea life because this ultimately teaches us about the importance of maintaining our oceans. We also want to educate others about the importance of sea life.
