Could you go a day without using something involving a computer? Every day all of us utilize a computer in some manner. Because of this, I have started a new course at our school this year, computer science principles. I want my students to have a basic understanding of computer science.
I am a proud teacher of a very diverse and exceptional group of students.
My students represent a very diverse group of individuals, not only in terms of ethnicity but also socioeconomic status. While some of my students have had the benefit of having a computer at home to utilize, there are still several students who have had very limited contact with a computer.
The school itself is an IB world school with a very challenging curriculum. Our students pursue very rigorous classes, but this would be a class with more practical applications. The creation of this lab class will allow our students to put some real world skills into practice and this class hopes to bring the excitement of computer coding into our building. This will be an excellent opportunity for us to expand our STEM network and learning for our kids.
My Project
Currently, the students who are enrolled in the computer science principles class must travel to another campus to utilize a computer lab for the course. Because of this travel, the amount of time that can be utilized for instruction is significantly reduced. Additionally, because of this limitation, it is difficult for students to complete assignments outside of the class period, especially if he/she does not have a computer at home.
The purpose of these computers is to help start up a computer lab at the campus in which the students are located on. The students will be able to utilize the lab to continue investigations into computer science outside the typical class period. Additionally, this lab will provide a resource for students who do not have access to a computer at home.
This project will make a difference because it will allow students to utilize technology outside of the class period that he or she might not normally have access to.
This will promote computer science and potentially provide the spark that will create future computer science majors.
