Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There is never a time in my classroom where kids are not moving, being challenged, or reaching their goals.
A total of 626 students make up the culturally and socioeconomically diverse learning community.
The majority of the community is comprised of lower-middle class residents who are primarily Caucasian and Hispanic. A full 84% of the student population is Hispanic/Latino, 8% are white, and the black/African-American population is 3%. The remaining 4% is comprised of Asian, Pacific Islander, and of multiracial ethnicity. A total of 83% of the families are considered low-income and receive free or reduced price lunch.
Our school is also an educational institution for English Language Learners (11%), students with disabilities (7%), and 1% who are homeless. Many of the students enjoying coming to school each day. We have an above average student attendance rate at 95% when compared to other schools in Illinois. The students typically are motivated and show positive attitudes and effort when activities and lessons are related to them and what they previously know.
My Project
I will be using the three bicycles I am requesting in my classroom for less fortunate students who may not have the ability to afford and purchase their own bikes. At our school, we have been creating a biking movement with the students and community. To help relate our lessons to the students, we have been using volunteer staff and students to ride throughout our school's community, using our school's GoPro camera to capture footage of the beautiful town the students live in. I then take this footage and edit the film to make what is called a virtual reality bicycle interval training video.
This video is used in our school's fitness center during physical education classes when training on our cardiovascular exercise machines for motivation and fun. I want the ability for any students who are interested in exercising and riding bicycles to be able to join the staff and other students when riding throughout the community. I want to make learning fun, and meaningful to the students.
This project will help students to become more active and live a healthy lifestyle.
It will also help bring the community, students, and school closer together. I want the students to know I will do anything to help guide them to success. I feel by spending more time at my school and with my students, I am able to make a greater difference in the community. I want to create community biking fundraisers to help raise money for many different world issues. I want to make learning fun for the students.
