Big Books! Little Books! Help Us Take a Bigger Look!
My students need more modeling of what good readers do, so I am requesting big books, interactive poems, and an easel, so we can experience the love of reading together

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Dr. Seuss said, "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go." The Common Core has greatly increased the expectations in our classrooms, and now many of our students are not progressing quickly enough, especially in reading and writing.
My students are bright, lively first grade individuals living in a rural town.
The majority of them are English Language Learners, and do not have as much support at home as the average American might simply because of the language barrier. It isn't that our parents do not want to provide support; they regularly engage themselves in their children's schoolwork, and offer as much help as is possible.
Our school is a Title I school, and many of our parents are working more than one job to make ends meet. Our students get free breakfast, and many receive free lunch daily because of the high rate of poverty in our community. Still, my students are loving, sweet, intelligent and have big dreams of "the places they will go" one day. The teachers at my school are working very, very hard to see that they get to the places in their dreams.
My Project
"The more you read, the more things you will know..." Literacy is an area where our students struggle greatly, and research says that students who are not exposed to enough well-rounded literacy, have even more difficulties developing it. I have always delved deeply into Guided Reading and Read-Alouds with my students, but have not frequented the Shared-Reading portion of literacy as much. Leaving no stone unturned, I would like to be certain that my students are exposed to the aspects of literacy from every angle possible, to give them the greatest chance for success. I want to share with them all of the possibilities of places they could go. True shared reading requires materials that are large-enough for everyone to see at once, and so I have chosen several "Big Books" - fiction, non-fiction, and poetry that are printed in a larger format so that we can read them together. We will revisit these titles often to develop new ideas, and to solidify older ones.
Many of my students do not experience enough literacy being modeled outside of the classroom.
"Big Books" allow them to see me carefully model "what good readers do" daily. It also allows them to read stories [with me] they cannot read by themselves yet. By revisiting these stories, they become ingrained, and allow me to draw their focus to other aspects of the text such as fluency, and phonetic patterns to help them develop their skills as a reader. With your help, "Oh the places we'll go!
