My students need chart paper so that I can model stories, messages, letters etc. They also need primary composition books so that they can write their own stories.
We write and read every day. I do a lot of interrelated instruction. For instance, my centers are a mixture of language arts and math based centers. Students do a lot of science, math and social studies based writing.
I am blessed to teach in a truly diverse and small public school.
We have less than 400 students at our school from a variety of economic, racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds. We are a title one school so the majority of the families do not have a lot of money. My kindergarten classes are somewhat transient and usually consist of 20-24 students. About 40% of my students are English language learners. Their families hail from many countries including Nepal, Mexico, India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Iraq, El Salvador, Ghana, Haiti, Turkey and Ethiopia. The rest of my students are native English speakers of various racial/ethnic backgrounds including African American, Asian, Latino, African and Caucasian. It is truly wonderful to watch my students learn together, grow together, look out for one another, help each other and develop lasting friendships.
My Project
We begin and end each day with writing. We start our day with a morning message and end our day with writer's workshop. We use chart paper for dictations, story starters, modeling, writing nursery rhymes, creating new endings to songs, math story problems, etc. I'm very excited about the self-stick chart paper because I can easily display the writing we do during large group time for students to refer to at a later time. I am also excited about the chart paper that looks like the paper in their primary journals because I can use it to model for students how to match their writing to the pictures that they create. Students will write in their journals two to three times a week. I stamp the date on each page so that parents and students can see the progress that students make throughout the year.
These donations will help my students to begin their school careers as confident writers and readers.
At the beginning of the year many of my students struggle with writing their first names and by the end of kindergarten they are writing stories, poems, letters, and even reports!
