My Students

As students fall more in love with technology, it is my goal as a teacher to maintain their passion for authentic reading.

My fifth grade students come from a range of backgrounds, both culturally and socioeconomically.

When they enter my classroom, I strive to wash away whatever troubles followed them in with the magic of stories, both fiction and non-fiction, and to bring them to new worlds.

My Project

My students need 75 subscriptions to Scholastic News and 10 subscriptions to Storyworks for rigorous independent reading practice. These magazines will be a supplemental resource for my students in addition to the guided reading and independent reading books they already dig their noses into. Students will work together in partners or small groups to read and discuss the current events they discover in the readers. Students last year loved the readers, and I don't want to leave my new students hanging come September. The Common Core Curriculum has a focus on analyzing non-fiction texts collaboratively and these readers will be the perfect means of doing so.

Rarely do students seek out current events experiences on their own, but it is so important to be knowledgeable on world events.

It is my responsibility as their teacher to open their lives to the goings on in the world around them. These readers serve as a concrete way of linking critical reading skills which will prepare them for college with the knowledge of the world they need to continue their journeys to becoming global citizens.
