Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In need of furniture! I advocate that schools should be properly equipped to promote sound and effective teaching. Brooklings (2012) show that materials have large effects, and impact on student learning as large as or larger than the impact of the quality of teachers on student's performance.
My students are in Kindergarten.
We are a Title 1 school with an enrollment of 688 students where 93% are low income students and 97% are Hispanic. Some of my 5-year-old students have lived many challenges as well as family or home-related issues. Such as financial needs, emotional separations, lack of learning, and lack of recreational opportunities besides what school has to offer since most of parents work more than one job.
This is my first year in this school & I received a classroom with some bins, no small baskets, but with only one individual shelf unit.
I am a very creative person and many things in my classroom have been personally funded by me like little baskets for storing pencils & crayons on each group's table. I have two old black plastic milk carriers where my Math Center materials are stored, but they are still on the floor, not sorted out, in plastic bags, and with no ease of use due to this limitation of proper storage.
My Project
My students will benefit of having the basic furniture to store materials, ready to use, and organized. These are necessary items needed to engage my students in the balanced literacy program in our school where I will provide 120 minutes daily of reading and writing instruction. For instance, I have bought ABC's stamps, as well as ink pads from the dollar stores, but they ran out quickly. Kindergartens benefit a lot from using them as they can not only manipulate letters, syllables to form words in these early writing stage, but also improving their fine motor skills.
Organization and management is a key component of effective instruction. As well as comfortable areas with a rug for Bilingual Centers and daily activities. This furniture and materials needed are an integral part of the demands of our Literacy program. My students need furniture, small rug, bins, pocket chart, inkpad. All these for organization in the Math and Reading Centers in our classroom.
My students and I will benefit tremendously having not only one shelf unit in the classroom for only one of the Bilingual Centers.
But also, the adequate furniture needed in each Reading/Writing, and Math Centers to store their instructional materials. You can make an impact on my student's performance by providing the furniture and organization that our classroom needs!
