Baggage Claim: Reclaiming Emotions with a Relaxation Station

My students need a comfortable area to reflect on during times of high stress. This area includes a cushion, timer, and fidget toys such as stress balls.

My Students

My classroom is designed to be an area in which students feel supported and safe. Whether it is greeting each student at the door, ending the week with a "Friday Hug or High-Five", or the countless team building activities in-between, I always make sure my students are reminded of their importance.

As a magnet school, I have students in my classroom from various areas within our school district.

My children are eager to learn and love expressing their creativity. Throughout the year I teach each student in our 5th grade, as we switch classes for each academic area. Unfortunately, many of my students enter each day with a weight on their shoulders from outside factors, which in-turn, makes learning difficult.

My Project

We know that in order to learn, one must feel physically and emotionally secure. By installing a relaxation station in my classroom, students will be given the opportunity to reflect on what's "eating away at them" and hindering their ability to focus on the material being taught. The yogibo mini chair will provide the perfect level of comfort for students, as they have been recommended to help promote body awareness and refocus the brain- both of which are important when teaching children how to cope. In addition, the Tangle Relax Therapy toy will have a calming effect as students transfer their anger and frustrations on the toy, rather than take it out on school property. The timer will provide a visually stimulating effect, as well as allow students the ability to self-regulate their length of time in the station. I have also requested a class set of stress balls which can be kept away under their tables and can be used discretely during times of anxiety or anger.

Your donations to help fund my relaxation station will help transform my classroom into a more peaceful environment.

All students will be invited to use the station, under the condition that they use it to reflect on their thoughts and come back ready to learn. In turn, students will learn to cope with the stress of everyday life in a healthy and safe way.
