Imagine the knowledge the students will acquire while conducting a scientific investigation using magnetic wands! Most students know what a magnet is, but can they see a magnetic field? Can they find the magnetic poles? With magnets, we hope to!
My first grade classroom is comprised of 100% military dependents.
They are an amazing group of 6 and 7 year-old kids who attend school while their parents serve in Afghanistan, recover at the military hospital from their war-inflicted injuries, or complete their duty to our country. They love learning, have fun making EVERYTHING into songs, and find pure joy in hands-on exploration. I want to provide them with every opportunity to flourish and grow. I owe them at least a year of growth and I know that my efforts and partnership with parents and DonorsChoose will allow me to help my learners! The best part? I get to loop with my students to 2nd grade so you will be helping these great children for another academic school year!
My Project
The magnetic wands, iron filings, and various magnets will let the students see the relationship between magnetic attraction and master these force and energy standards! We've known what a magnet is, and probably played with magnets all of our lives, but have you ever seen a magnetic field? Have you ever found the magnetic poles on a magnet? With different shapes, sizes, and kinds of magnets we can explore and learn that the poles aren't always on the ends, that different magnets have differing strengths, and that the strength of a magnet doesn't have to relate to size.
Donations to this request will make a tremendous impact on my students.
I wish our days were longer, but since I can't change that, I use every minute to help my students succeed. I do not want lost learning time, and my fast finishers can continue their learning while allowing me to meet the many varied needs in my classroom. These materials will not only be used in direct instruction, but also for personal exploration and observation by students as work is finished.
