My Students

You can't stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes" - Winnie the Pooh.

Our school is not able to offer separate art classes for the students at this time.

So we are venturing out of our little corner to ask for your help. My classroom is home to 9 wonderful students with Autism who are in 7th and 8th grade. We are a self-contained classroom with all levels of ability. Some of the students are still working at a Pre-K level while others have progressed to 3rd or 4th grade level depending on the subject. Our school is located in Illinois in a high-poverty area. We do not have all of the materials that allow them to complete art projects. ANY materials we receive through Donors Choose are a blessing as I cannot ask the parents to help supplement what the school cannot provide. My students need glue sticks, construction paper, crayons, scissors and markers so we may complete art projects in our classroom.

My Project

I have students of varying abilities within my classroom. Some are non-verbal and many times they are only able to express themselves through their art work. I also plan many artistic activities for them that help underscore the curriculum topic we are currently studying. This allows them to share their knowledge of the subject in a non-verbal manner. Art supplies are always needed within the classroom and would be very welcome.

Allowing my students to express themselves is extremely important to me.

I have many students that are non-verbal and allowing them to create pieces of art or expressions reflecting the topic material gives me a chance to see into their world and their understanding of material.
