Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember when you were in art class as a kid and you felt like a real artist when your hands were messy with clay??? Many of my students have not yet discovered the joy of squishing clay between their fingers in the process of creating a magnificent piece of 3D art!
I teach at an inner city middle school, where my 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students can't wait to get to art class.
They struggle with some of the other subjects in school, so I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to provide them with a welcoming atmosphere where they can flourish in their artistic creativity.
My Project
My students need clay, glazes, and basic clay tools to create 3D projects. By having supplies such as clay and glazes, my students will finally feel like true artists with legitimate art supplies. Due to a low budget, many of our projects are simply on paper, cardboard, or recycled materials. I would love for them to have the opportunity to connect to ancient artists by sculpting with one of the oldest art mediums. I plan to do projects such as coil pots, miniature animals, and character creations. They will learn about clay techniques as well as an art history connection to ceramics masters.
Our school has not had the funding or supplies to be able to do a ceramics project for several years.
I am hopeful that we can finally make it happen! Every day at least one student asks if they will get to use clay this year. I would love to finally answer affirmatively to make this year in art even more meaningful for them.
