This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Engineers have no creativity"... "Artists aren't realistic"
Art for Engineers class is a way for students to develop design skills across the spectrum in ways they have never before.
My students are minorities, primarily from low socioeconomic backgrounds where science and engineering are not seen as typical career pathways.
This project is for an urban New York public high school class of juniors and seniors exploring the intersection of artistic and technical design.
My Project
Students will not only learn how to draw 3D shapes on a computer, but bring them to life with the 3D printer and filament. Students will be learning how the choices of color, shape, and texture make for optimal artistic designs, while simultaneously designing mechanical pieces for projects that need to be functional. The printer will be heavily used in the Pumpkin hacking project, Autonomous Car project, and their own creative Product Design.
Most engineering students feel handicapped by the creative demands of real-world problem solving.
By integrating art design and technical design together, they will be better equipped to succeed at creating structures and products with mass appeal.
