This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from different cultures and backgrounds. They are all in need of learning technology to keep up with neighboring schools and the job market. Most students only use computers at school and so I want them to use them in art, in a creative fun class.

My school is a middle school with students in 6th,7th and 8th grade.

The majority come from disadvantaged homes and are in need of caring teachers and schools with enriching programs. The art program I teach, I hope is enriching, giving them a chance to learn about technology in a situation with many successes and rewards for their creative use of technology. The kids I teach score below average on standardized tests but are street smart in general. As all classes there are a variety of personalities and strengths. The school has leaders, rebels and strong personalities. I think they are healthy individuals with open minds to learning and using new technology such as iPads.

My Project

We are starting a new art class for middle school students using technology to teach art. They will use iPads to paint, iPads to learn math and art, iPads to learn about art and literacy and iPads to do animation. I have just completed an advanced iPad and art class with 50 new lessons to teach. We will use stop motion to create videos of school rules with iMotion. They will learn how to paint with layers using the Brushes 3 app or Sketchbook Express App. We will create tangram's on the iPad and then make clay tile tangram's. Students will work in teams, table groups and take turn with the iPads since we are not a 1-1 iPad school. They will create art first and photograph the work and then use on the iPad. They will use the iPad for ideas for their drawings on paper. Students will create movies and stop motion animation. They will use the iPad to take photographs of their work and upload to a school Flickr album. They will learn about math and literacy and technology.

The students I teach do not have access to computers and iPads.

Having an iPad in the art room will increase their familiarity with technology and keep them in line with other more affluent students in other more affluent school districts. The more they use technology/iPads, the more it becomes second nature and they become skilled with skills they can use in the job market today. This is aligned with the common core as well.
