My students are participating in the schools first self-paced (mostly) online classroom. The class requires students to watch online lectures and take notes before completing activities. We were given headphones that either don't produce sound or break easily and some students don't have their own.
Most of my 90, 8th grade students have grown up a stones throw away from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Once you look past the beauty of the scenery, you will notice the sounds of students learning in our nearby intermediate school. Our school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry. Our school has been trying to increase the technology use that will prepare our students for college and career readiness. This is a school that needs your help.
My Project
In my "flipped classroom" my students receive their lectures through an online program where they are expected to take notes and interact with the material. The class has been designed to be self-paced so I can meet the needs of all of my students. Now the "fast-paced" students are able to move ahead while I am able to spend more time with my struggling students.
Since the lectures are online and the students are all in different spots in the unit, it is possible for the students to be watching different lectures within the same period. The headphones are key in this process so students are not distracted while trying to gain important background knowledge needed for the classroom activities and labs for the unit.
It is also important for the students to become responsible for the condition and usage of those headphones. The cart will serve as a place to store the headphones so the students are held responsible.
A "Flipped Classroom" is an experiment in self-directed learning and with these high quality headphones my students will be able to listen to their lectures without distractions and without fear of the dainty "kindergarten-like" headphones falling apart on their larger 8th grade heads.
