Anatomy Enrichment: Dissection for Understanding

My students need animal parts (heart, lung, brain, eye) to see the correlation between their structure and function and how they are affected by diseases.

My Students

My students are excited about learning about themselves and the animals around them. Many wish to become doctors and veterinarians. They love the hands-on dissection of anatomy to see how these important body parts work.

My students are from a diverse population in North Carolina.

They are eager to learn new and different concepts in greater detail than they have had access to previously. Our school has 45 minute classes, so with the large amount of curriculum we have to share, students no longer get the benefits of animal part dissection in their regular classes to increase their understanding of anatomy and how all the parts work together. Students with a strong desire to learn more detailed anatomy select this elective class.

My Project

Many students learn better in a hands-on situation and this unit will greatly enhance their learning and their ability to remember what they have learned. They will be able to see, touch and manipulate these systems and discover through inquiry how they work. The heart valves and circulatory system can be manipulated to show the one-way nature of the system. Eyes have many layers which enable them to perform in many varying situations. These layers will be separated to see how they work together to be most effective. Lungs can be "blown up" to model normal and diseased conditions (asthma), as well as dissected and put under a microscope to show the parts involved in this critical system. The brain is mapped out and compared to MRI scans of damaged brains to gain an understanding of how the brain compensates for physical deficiencies.

Being able to see, touch and manipulate different animal organs brings the concepts of how they move and work into a whole new light that will be remembered for years, and hopefully encourage a new generation of students to continue to learn about the fields of veterinary and human medicine.
