An iPad For Math, Science, And Outdoor Education!

My students need an iPad and a few accessories to integrate and streamline technology in our classroom and outdoor lab.

My Students

We are trying to free ourselves from the front of the classroom! With a few new pieces of technology, both teacher and students will be freed from being "stuck" up front at the white board when sharing thoughts, solutions, and multimedia resources with the rest of the class.

Our school is populated by a true mix of suburban and rural students.

While some students have consistent access to technology, many others lack reliable technology or Internet access outside of school. Recent financial struggles have hit our state and community hard. Each year more and more students in our district receive assistance such as free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Despite the challenges that face many of our students, our school is filled with a sense of love and wonder for learning. Students enjoy innovative programming in our school, which allows for classes such as school gardening, robotics, drama, movement and fitness, and even outdoor environmental education in the woods behind our school.

My Project

Currently, in order to share work on our class whiteboard, either a student or myself must be anchored to a media cart at the front of the classroom. This serves as a major barrier to students who struggle socially, as standing in front of their peers can be an intimidating experience, despite our positive and supportive classroom environment. I also have more and more students who are required to sit in the front row of my class per IEPs and 504 plans, and quite frankly, I've run out of such "real estate"! An iPad paired with an Apple TV would allow me to circulate around the classroom while simultaneously projecting to the whiteboard. Students could share work from the the comfort of their desk through live streaming through the iPad's camera. This technology would also allow the use of a variety of educational apps in the classroom without the teacher or student being glued to a stationary computer. Every desk in the classroom would serve as a front row seat!

Students benefit from proximity to their teacher during the learning process.

Through this project, every student would have such an experience as I would be able to circulate in a more efficient classroom. With this technology, I would be able to teach beside students, rather than in front of them, which is far more in line with my school's and my own philosophy towards education. Improved technology in the classroom would allow for a more seamless and natural flow of learning for all involved
