"All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten" by Robert Fulghum. This holds true more each year as the standards become more rigorous, and the children are required to know more and more.
My students are five and six year old kindergartners.
My school is a middle-class suburban school with all socioeconomic levels represented. We have our share of cultural diversity as well as a high population of special needs students. Teaching kindergarten nowadays is a lot different than it used to be. Playtime, naptime, and learning a letter each week has turned into knowing 75 sight words, reading on a first grade level, and understanding why we celebrate Labor Day and Veterans' Day. Unfortunately, we are not always given the materials needed to teach the standards we are required to teach. I work tirelessly, spending much of my own time and money, to provide the best education I can for my students.
My Project
I am asking for a set of Rookie Reader books about holidays. My students are expected to understand the reason for holidays such as Labor Day and Veterans' Day, and there are not many resources out there that are simple enough for my kindergartners to understand. These books are wonderful resources for me to use to teach about the holidays. They are simple enough for my students to be able to use and "read" themselves after they have been introduced. The same applies to the books I am asking for about American symbols.
Donations to this project will provide me with some amazing resources to help teach the social studies standards of American holidays and symbols.
My students will have a library of books they can look at and read throughout the year to help retain these standards.
