Alternative Seating for the Collaborative Classroom
My students need 6 Runtz Ball Chairs to provide them with alternative seating. Each chair has the bounce of an exercise ball and a sturdy base that keeps it in place.
A typical day in our classroom involves listening, thinking, collaborating, and moving.
We are an active bunch who work hard at learning.
My students love working on projects together and coming up with ways to demonstrate their learning. One of my goals, as a teacher and for this project, is to continually improve our classroom so that it is an environment that truly facilitates the learning of my 21st century students.
My Project
I believe choice in seating is a huge component of a classroom that invites an intrinsic desire to learn, and alternative seating has more than one advantage. First, if students are able to choose a seat that is comfortable they are likely to focus their effort on their work. Just as adults work best when we are comfortable, so do children. Second, any choices that they have throughout the day will increase personal responsibility or ownership of their education. Third, the seats I have chosen for this project allow students to move while they sit which may help with posture and concentration. These are just a few of the benefits this alternative seating will have for my students.
Currently, we have three seating choices in our classroom which consist of hard plastic chairs, a few bean bag chairs, and the floor.
Contributing to this project will add one more choice for the students. Specifically, Runtz Ball Chairs will add a safe seating option for students that need to move while they work.
