My students need 4 wobble chairs, 12 soft seats and 4 bouncy bands. They need options to choose from. By giving them options they can discover what will make them most successful.
When you walk into my classroom you will see a line of kindergarteners waiting for a hug. I want my kindergarteners to walk in and say, "Wow, this is where I want to be!" They are one of a kind! They are full of excitement and energy. Their smiles brighten my day and make my world a better place.
Like I said kindergarteners are one of a kind!
They have a zest and desire to learn. They are full of endless energy and excitement for life.
My kindergarteners come in excited to see me. Excited to start the day. Throughout the day, I try to include lots of movement into my classroom. In my room I believe in fun, play, laughter, exploring, and being social. After all my students are five. Although they are only five years old the expectations that we have for them are very high. We are expecting them to change, to fit into society's mold. We expect them to change but are we wiling to change for them?
As a teacher, I began to reflect on my teaching style and realized that I needed to focus more on my students and do what was best for them. I began researching different classroom styles and techniques. That is where alternative seating came into play. I wanted to have a classroom that conformed to my students instead of making my students conform to my classroom.
My Project
Imagine a classroom where students are given choice. A classroom where they are engaged, focused, and comfortable in their environment. A classroom where they have the power and they are in control of their learning. Even at the age of five.
I decided to jump right in and give alternative seating a try. Although I didn't have all the options I had a few so I went for it. I gave my students choice: they could sit at their table, sit on the floor, lay on the floor, or stand. I was SOLD! They were more engaged than ever and they loved it!
Because each child is different, I know that I don't have enough options to meet the needs of all of my students. If this project is funded I will have many different options for my students. I will be able to make a difference for each child in my classroom.
As a class, we have discussed how we are all different and that we all learn differently. I am empowering my kindergarteners to make their own decisions about their learning.
If you fund this project, my classroom will be conformed to meet the needs of ALL my students.
You will be helping me put their needs first. My students will have choice. They will have the opportunity to choose what works best for them. They will not only grow as students and learners but they will still get to be kids. Empowered students, kids with choice. You will help me make a difference in the lives of ALL of my students. After all, that is why I became a teacher - to make a difference!
