Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
By the end of the school year I want my kids to say, "She made us read, write, and think!"
My students come from various backgrounds ranging from above average incomes to below poverty lines (we are a true melting pot within our little community).
Many of my students qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. While many of these kids come from a tough neighborhood, they are determined to not be a statistic. Our school prides itself on being a community that sticks together no matter where anyone lands on a social economic level.
My Project
With a push towards common core, there is a need for more access to nonfiction text.
I thought bringing in various magazines each month would give my students access to timely issues they may not otherwise have access to. These materials would be available for any student to read during our designated free reading time (our "bell ringer" is to read for the first 10 minutes of class, and sometimes students forget their books at home). The magazines that are in my classroom are currently 5-6 years old and have seen better days.
I also thought bringing in a class novel, an updated class grammar book, and a class set how to read text would strengthen my students reading and reading awareness.
Finally, I think the Kelly Roach novels (both challenging and engaging) would be fantastic book circle books where students can have enlightening conversations about science.
All of these materials would be used to engage students in higher levels of thinking, writing, speaking and reading.
Donations toward this project will allow students to step out into the "real world" if only from my classroom.
Many of my students do not watch the news which is evident when we read our articles of the week.

My hope is to engage all my students in some way. I want to nurture the scientists and writers alike.
