My Students

Do you remember your middle school math experience? It is in this crucial age that students either develop a strong love of the material or sense of dread at the mere mention of the word "math". As a middle school math teacher, I do what I can to foster the love and quell the dread.

My students are an active group of math learners.

They are mostly seventh graders but there are some sixth graders mixed in. They enjoy hands on and real life applications of the mathematical content. As is the case with most students, they learn better when they are able to connect with the material or when the concepts are more concrete. This year they will get the first real taste of algebra. We will talk about linear equations and graphs, which could prove difficult for those students who benefit more from the tangible concepts. I teach at a diverse urban middle school in Wisconsin. Sixteen percent of my students qualify for special education services and 40% of my students are economically disadvantaged. Twenty-two percent of my students are English Language Learners.

My Project

The resources that your donation would fund are things that I will use to create a less threatening idea of algebra. In years past, when I have introduced the fact that they will be starting the algebra unit many students shut down believing the stigma that algebra is too difficult. With these resources, posters, lessons involving group work and a myriad of leveled games and activities, I will be able to create a less scary atmosphere for studying algebra. They will be able to experience many levels of algebra and work together to deepen their understanding of the concepts. It will be designed to be an environment of mutual support among the students.

Your donations will give me the resources I need in order to take the fear out of algebra for my students.

It is my hope to foster a love of math and algebra in all my students. I believe that with these materials, my students will be able to see the impact of algebra in "real life" applications. They will be able to connect to the concepts and, as such, strengthen their understanding.
