Do you remember what it was like to participate in family game night? My students do not have the opportunity to expand their minds with educational games. I oversee an after school tutoring program where 5th graders mentor and support 2nd/3rd graders with their studies.
The after school tutoring program I oversee caters to an at risk group of 20 2nd and 3rd graders.
These students don't have the home support that many achieving students have. I rely heavily on the support of 5th graders to be positive mentors and role models to our at risk students.
My Project
For two hours a week my 2nd and 3rd graders meet with their 5th grade tutors to complete homework, missing classwork, and to improve reading and math skills. I've found that a lot of the times homework gets lost in the shuffle between households. The attention span for reading lasts about a half an hour a session. I have requested a variety of learning games such as floor puzzles, Guess Who?, Apples to Apples, Math Bingo sets, and a variety of readers theater books. I think these educational games would be incredibly supportive to approach academics in a fun environment. Family game night was always the highlight of my week nights and it breaks my heart to know that these kids don't even get to experience this joy in their homes. I have one floor puzzle currently in my classroom and it's a delight to see the joy in the kids faces as they work with their tutors to complete a puzzle while learning about the 50 states. Your support with these games would be greatly appreciated
Your support with donating to help us gain educational games in the classroom would put huge smiles on the faces of many at risk students.
Remember, we want to share how education is fun! This is the perfect opportunity to do just that.
