I teach Graphic Arts to the district's 5th and 6th grade students. I have each class once a week for 40 minutes. This is not enough time to tackle bigger projects. They need an opportunity to explore other mediums after school! We need help with start-up materials such as easels, aprons and paint to be used every year!
My students are creative and enthusiastic about design.
They enjoy solving problems and sending personal messages through art. The class period is limiting to the type and complexity of the projects we are able to complete. Students are asking for art opportunities after school and would relish an opportunity to experiment with different mediums and experiment with different ways of showcasing their creativity.
My Project
My students will have the opportunity to sign up for 2 hour art workshops after school. The workshops will vary in days offered and project types. The students will have a chance to spend a longer period of time exploring fine arts and crafts with a certified art teacher. A two hour block, versus their typical 40 minute class, will allow for the use of materials and complex projects that they may not otherwise be able to explore.
This project will make a difference in the lives of these creative, artistically inclined students that may not otherwise have to opportunity to experiment with different art mediums.
Many students are requesting this opportunity and I am willing and excited to lead a variety of workshops. Art challenges higher order thinking skills in a way that is difficult to achieve in other subject areas. Students who are encouraged to create become better equipped problem solvers in their daily lives.
